Men Have Pelvic Floors Too!
June is Men’s Health Awareness Month!
Did you know that men are less likely than women to seek preventative care? One of the ways in which we can support the men in our community is to promote their ability and confidence to attend regular medical check-ups in order to combat high rates of preventable illness including heart disease and cancer.
Another way we can support the men is to promote general healthy lifestyle habits including eating a healthy diet, supporting healthy hydration, encouraging good sleep hygiene, as well as motivating them to exercise regularly!
Another aspect of men’s health is that of our favorite topic: men’s pelvic health! Men have pelvic floor muscles too! As with all muscles in the human body, they can function perfectly well or they can contribute to functional problems and/or pain.
Several conditions that we often see include, but are not limited to:
• genital pain
• anal pain
• overactive bladder
• erectile dysfunction
• premature ejaculation
• urinary incontinence
• bowel incontinence
• constipation
• hip pain
• low back pain
• abdominal pain
• sacro-iliac pain/dysfunction
• tailbone pain
• post-hernia repair
• post-prostatectomy
The pelvic floor muscles play a large role in making sure we have seamless bowel, bladder, and sexual function. When not functioning correctly, men can find themselves experiencing issues in this region.
As Doctors of Physical Therapy, we are trained in the body from head-to-toe so we assess your musculoskeletal function in other neighboring groups around the pelvic floor because ultimately they are all connected.
We are passionate about treating all human pelvises in our clinic, so if you find yourself having issues, we’d love to help!
