To Go Or Not To Go
To Go Or Not To Go: That Is The Question!
At Insight Pelvic Health, we offer rectal balloon sensation training as part of our specialized pelvic floor physical therapy services. This treatment is designed to help people who have difficulty sensing when they need to have a bowel movement.
The primary purpose of rectal balloon sensation training is to retrain the rectum’s ability to accurately send signals to the brain. For some individuals, these signals may be delayed, early, or confusing, which can contribute to constipation, incomplete emptying, fecal urgency, or accidents. By gently and gradually practicing sensation awareness, the nervous system can relearn what “normal” fullness and urge feel like.
During treatment, a small balloon is used to help identify and retrain different sensation thresholds. The process is guided one-on-one by a pelvic health physical therapist and is always paced according to your comfort and goals.
Rectal balloon sensation training is about improving communication between the rectum and the brain. When those signals become clearer and more reliable, many people find they can respond to the urge to go with greater confidence, control, and predictability. If you have questions about whether this treatment is appropriate for you, the team at Insight Pelvic Health is happy to help.
